"North-South" is one of the largest projects in the history of independent Armenia. This road (partly new, partly an extension of existing ones) will reduce the distance from the Iranian to the Georgian border from 550 to 490 km and will simplify access to the Black Sea not only for Armenia but also for Iran.

The first stage of the competition for the construction of the Sisian-Kajaran road section of the North-South highway is completed. The construction will begin in late 2022 or early 2023.

Sections from Yerevan to Artashat and Ashtarak are ready. For the construction of the road from Ashtarak further north (for an 8-kilometer section towards Talin), a developer has already been selected and is preparing for work. The section between the city of Talin and the village of Landzhik is almost complete and will be completed in November. Asphalting has been completed, road signs are being installed. On the Landjik-Gyumri section, work has been completed up to the intersection with the village of Orom, construction is still underway on the remaining 10 km. Finally, projects for a bypass road around Gyumri and a section from Gyumri to the Georgian border have already been drawn up and are now seeking funding.

The 60-kilometer Sisian-Kajaran section will make it possible to bypass the mountain passes between Goris and Kapan and reduce travel time by more than an hour. For this, the road from Sisian to Dastakert will be built directly to Kajaran, and several tunnels will be built on it
